Synth Britannia (2009)
Documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the center of the pop stage.
You could plausibly argue that the early 1980s were the last time pop was really innovative. Guitars, bass and drums were suddenly replaced by beeping boxes; blokey quartets were edged aside by gauche, serious duos. The latest film in the rock-solid Britannia strand talks to representatives of all synthpop's pioneers - The Human League, OMD, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Heaven 17, Yazoo, and the Numanoid himself - to explain how Brits who couldn't play guitar even to punk standards made music with machines. Just a few years after Kraftwerk and the Clockwork Orange soundtrack had inspired it, synthetic pop was subsumed into the mainstream.
