mmm.. well i`m still using Sequencer+ in DOS on a 486 PC! It controls the hardware very well since i overclocked it.. using an "evergreen" 133 chip, running at 150mhz in a 50mhz motherboard i used to get timing problems with too many things running at once..
only problem with oldskool sequencers is they have rotten memory problems - limited to what you have left out of 640k after booting.. not alot, especially if you like to record alot of controller information..
i tried using CUBASE and LOGIC and CAKEWALK, but they irritated me so much, i had to return to good old no-mouse land
i know the day is coming though when i will have to upgrade - PCs don`t last forever! this one is already 13 years old... i have a 386sx and a yamaha 286 lappie (C1) as backup, but they will be s-l-o-o-w compared to the zippy 486dx... mmm.. should get at least another 10 years out of the setup

mmm.. protools looks very nice indeed.. the logical conclusion for multitrack recording By the looks of it..
[nostalgia moden]
ahh, the days of 8-track reel2reel, having to stripe with s-FSK, then use a drummachine to trigger samples via audio triggers.. ahh the bleedover.. ahh the dropouts.. ahh the brain-damage.
i have been getting back to the REALLY old days lately in the studio.. using my 909 to move step-sequencers - 2 voltage 8-steppers, and 2 dual-pole gate 8-steppers.. lovely fractal-like patterns evolving
i did do a track last year where i wrote the patterns into the 909 instead of midi-trigging it from the PC.. clock'd the 909 and 2 303s from the 202 (which has multi-dinsync outs), and used an old 1.2sec 8-bit cv/gate delayline in "freeze" mode to confuse the issue.. all analogue effects.. mmm.. highly unstable

sx 4 could well blow protools out of the water
steinberg have yamaha onboard to manufacture cubase sx based desks, and theres talk of a computer hardware deal to take things down the farm card/dedicated box route
sexy indeed
