  • The Abbey Disks Thread...

    So.. as noticed - Abbey is about to close (25 Nov)..

    Very sad news, and we are all hoping Billy finds a nice small new shop soon, as the only way to go is to downsize and keep the head down as well!

    He had hinted that he had a new place to go, but it had fallen thru', so i hope the break over Xmas will help him get the head sorted out, and look to the future..

    I first found Abbey in 1982 - chasing a cassette-single of SOUND OF THE CROWD by HUMAN LEAGUE.. A Canadian import i think - anyway, it never surfaced as it got chewed up, but i did see a shedload of stuff there that nobody else had.. At the time, the only place to be sure of finding things like Polydor releases on 12-inch, was GOLDEN DISCS on Mary St., but Billy Had them too, and alot more besides..

    The abbey mall was a bit of a dive then, but it had Billy, and later another Record shop that did strictly clubby stuff - all imports from Germany and The states (was it BEAT records?) but their prices were very high for a 13-yo kid.. Billy had the full range, and the taste to know what was win, and what was fail..

    At first, Billy was the place to buy 12-inch singles, he had that reputation since the shop was actually on Abbey street - in fact the first few times i went to look for him it was at the old address, so it took a while to actually find him - but later on (1985-88) it was the place to buy Clubscene, Electro Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Rap.. The UK re-releases of all the big tunes were always there, and he kept a good stock of albums and the like too.. Sure, you could go to COMET off grafton street for the Indie 12-inches, but the soulfull non-rocky stuff was all Billy..

    Soon He was on the list of places for the top pirate stations and clubjocks of the day - always with the upfront stuff..

    By '89 he was the place for Ravey stuff and Belgian Hardcore, as well as a smattering of UK scene stuff - that wierd transition period between Rap and Rave!! My god what classics we found there..

    The shop was perfectly placed, after a hard graft, to capitalise on the vinyl explosion of 1992-1998.. 25 shops came & went - each trying to grab a slice, and some doing very well, but the last one standing was abbey after the dust settled. During this time the Abbey Discs label started.. Giving local talent a release at home, and licencing stuff in that Dublin wanted.. The Peak of this part of the story was McCabe's MANIAC 2000 - which gave Abbey the Biggest Seller of 2000 & 10 weeks at #1 - outselling (to my delight) the likes of U2 and Boyzone! Ha!! NEVAR FORGET!!!!

    So, the slide from then to here is a story we all know - the onset of CDs, downloads and sucky boring music reduced the need for people to actually buy records, and the addition of the Mainstream collapse of the music market heralded the end of this era.. (sigh) Don't forget that Abbey also had a branch selling mostly "normal" music at northside SC, and when that closed it's doors, the writing was on the wall..

    From what i understand, rent at the premesis on Liffey Street is high - it's a biiiiig space, and without the space paying it's way with the non-specialist music sales, downsizing was gonna happen sooner or later.. So, Cry now, Laugh Later - it had to happen - let's just wish Billy & Family a nice Xmas, and thanks for ~30 years of selecting & importing the chewns, and hope that someone will be able to revive the Shop, in a smaller (back-to-the-mall) guise next year..

      Sad day. I used to almost run up to the shop after getting the DART into town with the money for only one or two records. Bought my first ever 12" there which was the Crowd Control EP on green vinyl - didn't even have decks at the time.

      I'm reading a lot of shit from people saying that it's tough shit and who cares etc etc but these people don't understand that before the days of online shopping that Abbey was THE KING.

          Well, online is not the be-all & end-all.. The question of quality control comes into play.. For example - anyone can bang out whatever they like on the PeeCee, and upload it to www.onlinebolix.com for sale, calling themselves whatever they want - this does not make for a good tune!!

          In the past, records underwent a carefull process before release:

          * Original concept in studio
          * Mastering for vinyl cut
          * Acetate tests in top clubs by top DJs
          * Selling of worn acetates to dealers for barl moneys
          * Test-Pressings to sales directors at distributers to generate orders
          * Test-Pressings to Tastemaker DJs and TV & Radio Producers
          * Small Mailouts to Upfront DJs for hype charts
          * Mass-Mailouts to Regular Club DJs for Club Charts
          * Radio mailouts of edits to get the non-attentive clubbing public switched on
          * Press adverts and/or Public interfacing
          * End Sales in specialist shops
          * Non-upfront DJ plays & adoption
          * Compilation pitches for after-life sales
          * End Sales in Regular shops
          * Possible crossover chart placings
          * Last sales from Distributers
          * Deletion of the tune from Record company Catalogue
          * Record becomes Collectors item

          Now, how many of these average steps matter now? None.. Now the angle is:

          * Torrent the Plugins and Software you want
          * Make a tune
          * Upload it to www.sellmytunepleasemister.com
          * Mass-email anyone you can with a link to the mp3
          * Troll the sh1t out of the places you imagine people who spend money hang out about your aw3som3 new label
          * get 3c in royalties
          * find your tune on www.bentstuff.ru and BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWL
          * repeat process 50 times

          Yes, this is a good thing, as it excludes the Record Companies who you only end up oweing money to for a poster-campaign in Belarus, despite selling 100000000000 copies, but it's a sad thing too, because now music has NO VALUE. where is the THING I GET FOR MY MONEY? on a harddrive? on a CD-R? Fu*k that shit.

          THING TO REMEMBER: downloads suck balls, vinyl is made of win - that is all.

                    I felt like I was at a funeral in there on Monday.

                    The worst week for Irish dance music and DJ'ing in years and years (or maybe ever?)

                      I didn't go in on monday - was horrible outside, and i felt ropey enough without the dread of it all.. I heard there was a do after in Portmarnock or something? I could also have done without ending up there in a heap at 3am, which would have been the very LEAST that would have occoured, or something.. But the whole day just said: STAY IN BED, which i should have done.

                      Now then, TELEPORT ME TO THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY PLEASE.

                        Would've been great to see ya there.

                        There was a rumour of maybe everyone heading to Jim Kenny's night in Tamango when - initially - it was closing on the Tuesday (as Jim does Tues there as ya know). But when it closed on the Monday any talk of drinks went out the window.

                        There is now an "Abbey Discs Tribute" night been mooted for a Friday night in Dec or Jan in the Academy/Spirit.

                        Monday was tough to watch the shop been stripped down. At half 7 myself and a mate were the only 2 non staff (or friends of staff brought in to help dismantle) in the shop. I got a few final pics and said my goodbyes.

                        Such a shame that, although many of us rarely went there anymore, thats its gone - and maybe for good.

                        One of the best parts of Monday was seeing Mark Kavanagh sign a cover of "Sixth Season" (PWL edition) for a punter, havent seen an Irish DJ sign anything in over a decade

                        I think there should be some pics of Monday in tomorrow's Star

                          Aw... yes, i imagined the final dismantling would be a bit teary, i think i made the right choice staying in bed sulking..

                          The horror of BUYING SHIT ONLINE AND USING POXY CD PLAYERS looms for this weekend..

                          I even had to (gulp) buy a 2nd CD player this week in preperation. How horrible. I resent this, every moment of it.

                          In case it hasn't sunk in - last saturday night was the last time you will hear live mixing with vinyl on national radio in Ireland as part of a regular show. From next week, the mixed hour will be mostly CD, and possibly prepared a few hours earlier..

                          I could go trawling about for vinyl, but this close to Xmas, and with the puss on me, i say fu*k that.

                            Keep them decks on ice now, don't let the RTE tech maggots sell em off for cost-cutting or half the country'll march on the radio building.
