So.. The first rounds of letters warning people suspected of downloading stuff have started to arrive in the UK. Some ISPs are shutting people off, and with the changing hands of providers & websites becoming a weekly happening, it's time to discuss WTF.
Has anyone actually SEEN a letter of pwning? Is this all an urban myth? What would someone have to actually DO to make an accusation of illegal (sic.) downloading stick?
Let's take the first thing that pops to mind: TORRENTS. Delicious torrents. mmmm.. EVERYBODY loves the torrents. In fairness.
So. To catch a maggot torrenting, You (as a cyber-pig) would have to watch a torrent cluster of a file owned by someone(s) you have permission to act on the behalf of, analysing each IP address that joins. You would have to choose a target in a location You have duristiction over as it joins the cluster, with 0.00% of the file(s), and screencap this person until they have 100% of the file, noting how much they share with others for added bonus points. Then with this, extract the name of the user from the ISP, by requesting: 'who was the maggot with ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at [certain time] to [certain time]'. If the ISP were lamers, and have an contractual obligation to the owner of the material aleggedly pirated, they might supply this information. Might.
Then, the ISP _could_ issue a snotty letter to the owner of the account, one of the '3 strikes' we hear so much of.
3 of these letters, and you will have to move to another ISP.
So, what can we do? NOTHING is the answer. It's all bollocks. They CANNOT PROVE IT WAS YOU WITHOUT SEIZING YOUR MACHINES & DATA AND EXAMINING IT, THEN MATCHING IT FORENSICLY TO THE ALLEGED PIRATED DATA, Yet they can kick you off the internets on the sayso of some fgt in cyberpigland.
BUT, if they DO con the Guards into seizeing all Your 'puter stuff, You WILL have the added bonus of them having to index all your data!! AWESOME!! i have no idea whats on half the disks i have in boxes here - i could DO with a nice list of what's what and what disk it's on!!!!! BRING IT ON!!!!! Wow, i can finally find that copy of BLEEM i paid for a zillion years ago.. or that .DMS of TRIP-A-TRON!! oh baby..
Anyways.. it's all CYBER BOLLOCKS.
