Whats the crack with Frankie Wilde?

ok people most of us have seen the movie but as great a flick as it is, is he real? did he exist? did he make a one night comeback and launch a album? did he really go missing? was his name really Frankie Wilde? or is it a fictional name? im well lost! ive heard lots of different story's but which one is true?
