Oooohhh controversy.....I love it

Ive seen fergie DJ a total of 5 times since I started clubbing....we had him over 5 years ago when he was still playing hard dance, Ive seen him 3 times in the Redbox & then of course the other night.
I was a fan years ago,plain & simple....used to read his M8 column religiously cos I used to like his bit on all his new clothes he'd been buying lol - how gay am I...

The first time we had him over, I was well impressed afterwards....he was huge at the time & he lived upto his hype.
First time I saw him in the Redbox he was good aswell.
Second & Third times in the Redbox, i wasnt so impressed....although I was big into techno at the time & he was beginning to make the change also, I felt he played techno like a trance DJ....solid enough mixing,but lacking in any real excitement as opposed to the kind provided by somebody like Dave Clarke who I was mad into at the time....I do remember commenting at the time though that if I went to see him I'd always come away with maybe 2 or 3 tracks that I wanted ID'd (for example the Durango 95 mix of Tall Paul & a Cristian Varela track I hunted high & low for)
Now...between those 4 sightings & the other night,there was a gap of maybe 3 years.
In the time between those gigs he fell largely out of public favour, he'll even admit that himself as we talked about it the other night.
I myself wasnt into the music he was playing, I wasnt into his style....it just wasnt my thing.
Also in the meantime ferg developed a bit of a reputation for being inconsistent performance'wise, gettin pissed & dodgy mixes etc.
I will admit I never actually witnessed this first hand, but I did happen to hear a couple of recorded sets around the time & heard reports from mates whos opinions I would trust who had been to see him.
That kinda killed my interest in him to be honest, I got more into my Sasha/Zabiela/Steve Lawler buzz & just left it at that...which led to the opinion given in the post.
Also his track with Mauro came out around then....it was so far away from anything that I would normally have liked I just dismissed it & thought "jesus fergies gone to the dogs".....as I know alot of other people did. But funnily enough I had a rather interestng conversation with him about that the other night over a few drinks & I must say my opinion has changed a great deal on the situation....I still think the track is crap,but lets just say my eyes have been opened somewhat regarding it.

Anyway,I was then offered him for a date about 3 weeks ago.
At first I was a bit apprehensive about it because of my previous opinion but I checked out his Radio 1 playlist at which I have to say I was surprised, he was touching on some stuff that I was well into myself (Oliver Koletzki etc) & also with Wexford previously having been such a magnet for hard house I knew that people who had developed out of that (just like he did) would be willing to part with their cash to go see him + the fact that he might still have that factor of pulling the odd gem out of the bag swayed me on making the booking.
Now, anyone whos seen my Global Gathering pics will know that Ive commented that we had a right laugh with him that night so i was expecting more of the same, & I wasnt disappointed. I made a comment on another board that would be particularly down on him that whatever people may think of him from a DJ'ing point of view,the chap is a madhead & basically a fuckin great laugh to be around.
I was asked by people about his set the other night & Ive responded by saying that I liked the stuff he started off playing, he told me beforehand that he wanted to start around 130bpm & for the first hour he kept it nice & chonking along for a good hour at least.
Im not as into some of the harder stuff he was playing towards the end but thats just me & Im not a sheep thats gonna turn around & say that I fuckin loved every track he played....the same way I'd expect someone to comment about my set.
He said to me afterwards that he didnt think I played the way I did because of the stuff I told him i was into....largely because I played that way very early on as the place was filling up & as a bit of a crowd develops you have to give them something that theyre gonna want to dance to,Im not on before him to lash it out....I am there to get people moving....so i kept it at 130bpm but dropped some King Roc style stuff along with a bit of Buick Project etc...and believe me anyway,the type of crowd that was in werent gonna start moving to the kinda gear thats on the first hour of my November promo mix (which is what I'd be most into at the moment)

My opinion has changed a great deal on him since the other night, not to the point that I think hes the worlds greatest DJ (Im sure he wouldnt even claim to be that himself)..and also not to the point that I wanna go out and buy every single track he plays,because DJ'ing is about individual taste & anyone who buys a track just cos X big name DJ is playing it is fucking sad.....but more to the point that I think hes a fuckin bang on bloke & I'd be more than happy to have him over again. (and more than likely will at some stage in the future)

We all have mates who have decks....we may like some tracks they play,we may not like others....but that dosnt make them a dickhead.
He played alot of stuff I liked & he played some stuff I wasnt that into....but there was some gear he pulled outta the CD wallet at an afterhours session that I was well impressed with.
When you meet somebody personally it can change your opinion on them a great deal, its human nature to have a pre-conception but Im big enough to admit that my opinion previous to meeting him was based on "fergie - that bloke in the magazine off radio1"....but now its based on "fergie - that bloke who came on a session with us,we had a laugh with & who is personally a top fuckin geezer"
