Random thoughts on the current Refit at the studio:

Every 5 years or so, the studio reaches critical level - When 50% of the cables don't go anywhere anymore, when 1 in 3 synths is ignored/redundant as it`s insane(ish), when long-lost objects are found covered in dust and cobwebs, when you realise you have been powering up gear every day for 5 years that doesn`t make any noise - yes, it`s time for a gutting. So. I found a box of blue carpet tiles in a skip (as you do), and have decided to fit them "the hard way" - by clearing out the room, hoovering it, and laying them.. Today the 2 mixing desks were disconnected and put into storage, along with the mastering chain and recorder, and most of the non-wall mounted stuff.. All the audio and power cabling is out and sorted into neat stacks, as is the MIDI. The old 486 is offside now, and is due a hoovering to de-clog it's 1992 ass.. (only 1 fan: in the PSU!) Gonna leave the 7-foot modular rack as it`s too dangerous to move, and I am retireing the Matrix 1000 and Marion Modular as they are mad, and will probably loose the 2 Basstation racks as well, to make space for the Monowave (currently ill..) and Crazy Old Quazimidi Rompler.. Those basstation racks never got used for anything other then as M2CV converters, and the MARION has been hatstand for years, as has the Matrix 1000, which has one bogey filter i think, or possibly 1 bogey env. chip (or whatever) - i`m gonna strip it and re-seat all the chips in their sockets, as that cured the Matrix 6 of it`s 10-year battle with instability and suicidal crashing.. May save it.. But the Basstations are blanked. 100% functional, but blanked. That makes 5 i had, and 5 blanked. Excellent. So, that leaves the FX rack as it always was - hidden and ignored, the master chain on a trolly r2d2 rack ready to sit anywhere there is space, the keyboards on wall-mounts in a stack, except with some thought to the layout this time so you can see what you are adjusting (helps on all-knob/slider monosynths with 1 memory hihi..), and the desks in the middle somewhere, on something.. er.. Oh my god why.. WHY.. WHYYYYYYYY....... Ahhhhhhhhhh.. Such a jigsaw... And into it all i have to somehow encourage this Pro-tools rig (which i hate already) to behave with my nice old Voyetra Sequencer as a Multitrack, and squeeze 2 Towers into the mess - although i procured 2 Flatscreens, and a KVM, so i can share a Keyboard between the EMU sampler, The Protools box, and the 486, with the trackball hard-wired to the protools pc, as the 486 has no mouse I'm gonna go back to using patchbays again this time. too much chopping and changing over the years led to chaos in the wire dept., so it's PB all the way for the Analog Gear's output, and hardwire for the Samplers, FX and Multi Only. I expect to jump thru hoops to get this all back online, but i'm definatly sticking to the real studio aspect - i really enjoy patching up sounds on the modulars, and making noises by hand with real instruments.. In fact, this past year the most fun i've had has been making complex sounds, it kept me going.. but i need this refit, the place is a disaster to work in, and i wasn't enjoying sessions - running into brick walls, having constraints on me for the first time in 10 years is not good, i actually had to compromise recently as the sound i wanted wasn`t possible in the studio anymore.. Well, that's out the window, this refit will turn it back into the toyshop it was designed to be Toyz r us baby.. Toys r us..
