PRODUCT 19
John Bromage, aka Product 19, became one of Pittsburgh’s most established underground dance music DJ’s and is currently establishing himself as a recognizable name in the U.K. and Europe. Starting over ten years ago, he has played with some of the biggest names in music ranging from Bad Boy Bill and Afrika Bambaata to Carl Cox, Chris Liberator and Juan Atkins at some of the largest and highest quality parties in the U.S., England, and Europe. With major residencies at ElectraSoul (Pittsburgh’s only all-techno weekly), The Matrix, Metropol, Club Laga, and Zythos among others, Product 19 is no stranger to playing for club crowds. He has performed coast-to-coast at clubs and parties in cities such as New York City, Philadelphia, Portland, Toronto, San Francisco, Cleveland, Washington D.C., Detroit, and many more. In 1997, he was asked to compete in the “Battle of the DJ’s” at Buzz, which was based in Washington D.C. and the biggest club night in the U.S. run by Scott Henry. In 2000, he traveled to the UK for a three week tour where he performed in London, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, Devon, and Skegness. Since then, he was asked to return on numerous occasions and play again based on the audience response he received. He now resides in London. His musical style has changed over the years from progressive trance to hard/acid trance to techno. Currently, Product 19 can be heard playing hard European-influenced techno and London acid techno at parties and larger clubs and funky techno, tech-house or minimal at smaller clubs and lounges.
In addition to DJing, Product 19 has been a music promoter since 1996. Initially, throwing small squat or renegade-style parties, he then founded House of Styles Productions (H.O.S) in 1997. H.O.S. was responsible for throwing some of the most memorable events in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland area history including the “Detergent Series” (Bounce, Dynamo, Biz, Cheer, Dawn, Joy, and Era). Era was the largest electronic music event in the region. H.O.S also threw the first all-techno event in Pittsburgh history, SubPhunc 27, with Phryl Productions from Toronto and hosted Liquid in Cleveland with ShortArm Productions. In 1999, H.O.S, in conjunction with Phryl, threw Integral in Pittsburgh. This was the first Plus 8-style party to be held outside the Detroit/Windsor area which exclusively featured Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva and other artists from Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 record label. Other events thrown were Proper featuring The Planet of the Drums tour with Dieselboy, DJ Dara, and AK 1200, Supreme which featured the Destiny Tour with Chris Liberator, Christopher Lawrence and OS/2, and Accelerate which hosted the Logical Progression Tour with LTJ Bukem and the Funky Techno Tribe Tour with DJ Sneak, DJ Dan and many others.
As far as clubs, Product 19 has been involved in some of the most ground breaking club nights in Pittsburgh. This started in 1997 when H.O.S., along with 5 Star Productions, hosted Atomic at Metropol on Thursdays which, at the time, was one of the first club nights to steadily bring in the world’s top DJ’s and live acts consistently every week. It became one of the largest and longest running underground club nights in Pittsburgh’s history. The diversity of styles and caliber of world-class talent presented ranged from internationally acclaimed DJs such as Carl Cox, Derrick May, Dave Angel, Eddie Richsrds and Mr.C to U.S. favorites Dieselboy, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan, and DJ Icey. By becoming a resident DJ, Product 19 was able to develop the ability to play different styles. Recently, Product 19 hosted the 3 year+ running weekly in which he also resided at, Electrasoul at Memphis Lounge/Zythos, which was the first all-techno based weekly. Styles featured ranged from tech-house, tribal, and tech-trance to hard techno and acid techno. Electrasoul also featured resident DJ’s WRECKED!, Ted Zelch, Colin Pierce, DVS, Frank Gambino and VJs Laboratory Type-0 from Japan.
Recently, Product 19 became the promoter of and resident DJ at London’s longest running techno night, The Nuclear Free Zone, which is the Liberator DJs’ monthly. The club night has been running for over 12 years and features Aaron, Chris, and Julian Liberator, and DJ Cloggi as rotating residents with guest DJs from all over the world.
He also continues to pursue his interests in music production. During one of his early trips to England, he worked in the studio with DJ/producer Roland Deem aka Rowland the Bastard (Infected, Bionic Orange, Planet Rhythm, Smitten, Stay Up Forever). The studio session resulted in tracks that are to be released on the UK techno label, Infected Recordings. Recently, he worked with Ant (Powertools, Hydraulix, Stay Up Forever) for the newly released track “Blue Black” on Chris Liberator’s label Maximum/Minimum. Other production projects include work with Pittsburgh techno artists Thumptek and Shadowstar and more studio sessions in the UK with Roland Deem, Ant, and Guy McAffer (The Geezer) among others.
Currently, you can find Product 19 playing out across the US, U.K. and Europe often with VJs Lab Type-0. You can also hear him on Fridays from 14:00-17:00 EDT(-5 GMT) on Montreal radio station Techno.FM. For more information or bookings for Product 19, e-mail product19@techno.fm or visit
