Stinger Torrents?
Recently some friends have been Stung with torrents claiming to be [insert some movie thats so crap you would only see it if it was free] - but when they are finished, they play for ~30 seconds, advertising some bullsh1t media player or codec you "require" to watch the Film.
Lurk Points:
* Files are ~ 800MB - typical for a decent DivX crush of a 90 minute movie
* Files have Filenames with names of leading Packers inserted to boost ur confidence
* Files are UNCOMPRESSED .AVI - so 30 seconds actually IS about 800MB!!
* Upon playing you get a Distorted / twisted image, that hints the file is encrypted, directing you to a website to Download software to help play it
Facts:
These files are Torrented by a third party/parties engaged by the original Copyright owners to waste OUR PRECIOUS BANDWIDTH
These Files are 100% pure Bollocks
The Links they direct you to are Java-bomb laden nonsense sites, OR, the software you download will fu8k your PC in the ear (if you use windows)
Tips:
ALWAYS examine the contents of a torrent before commiting to it - download any .nfo, FILEID or README file in the torrent FIRST and examine it for authenticity.
If the Torrent is one Giant File, suspect the worst - Proper Couriers NEVER package stuff in one file, its ALWAYS split into Uniform sized smaller files (usually .rar) to ease spreading.
If the torrent doesnt have a correct TITLE (ie: with loads of l337 5p33k) then you can bet you are dealing with an asshole seeder
ANOTHER IRRITATING DEVELOPMENT:
Large multi-file torrents are turning out to have small pieces removed shortly after announce, but left to seed - if you see a recent torrent with like 100 peers, all hanging at 98.76% (or whatever) - DONT BOTHER - this, again is and attempt to annoy you. DO NOT stay attached to a torrent like this. You will be victim to a Flood of crap at your IP address!! The more people that join such a torrent, and get the available 90%, the more attractive it looks to new peers, and the more people hang on waiting for the mystical last few % to turn up. REMEMBER: a torrent with 100 seeds is fu*k-all use if nobody actually has 100% of the torrent on offer..
