Anyone messing with linux in the past year might have noticed the pulseaudio daemon. It's 100% software which means it runs on every audio card/device under the sun, but it also has network functionality.
EG: You play mp3's on one system, fire up YouTube on the same system and route the audio from YouTube to any other pc/laptop on your network. Every app with some audio angle becomes a routable device/stream, and they can all playback at the same time (Skype, IM app, YouTube/any Flash app in your browser, system notification sounds - everything) Some geeks even got it to work over bluetooth. Hah! 5 stars.
The other news is It's available for Windows as well
